hello its moems and it's doodlelunchtime I just took a number 17 andput on that side and I I made it adinosaur a racecar that's a littlelittle for you um it's good to be withyou here again for our second day we'regonna talk about some books and do somemore googling and stuff and I have toadmit the last couple days but that'sokay and sometimes when you're nervousyou make little mistakes or things likethat so I realized that yesterday onMarch 16th after we proved the pigeon Idid not ask you to come up with pigeonideas of your own your own story soinstead of don't let the pigeon drivethe bus I've gotten people of readingyou know don't let the pigeon operatethe catapults or don't let the pigeonjump too high don't let the pigeon makea peanut butter and jelly sandwich so ifyou're looking for something to do thisafternoon I really encourage you to dothat to make up your own pigeon storyand maybe make a cover and figure outwhat the book is about and then have areading we did to your family or towhoever is at home or maybe like thisvia a screen or the internet orsomething well today I want to talk alittle bit about elephant and piggy andthis book waiting it's not easy yeah cuzwe're we're gonna do a lot of waitingfor the next couple weeks I mean thisturns out to be one of my favoriteelephant in PE books and I didn't thinka lot of people were gonna like it whenI wrote it this was really something Ithought for me but it turned out thatthey did if you don't know what thestory's about it's about Gerald whodoesn't like waiting and piggy has asurprise and they have to wait all dayand into the night well I looked in myold notebooks but yesterday I showed youguys some of my notebooks I lookedall notebooks but your ideas that Iwrote down on in between October 2012and March 2013 which is a long time agoand it's kind of fun to see becausesometimes people say well you know whereyour stories come from how do you createyour stories well you don't always startat the beginning and you you don'talways start at the end you don't alwaysthought little every book is a littlebit different so sometimes just makedrawings to try and figure out what'sgoing on put these characters into apositionit's piggy holding a flashlight becauseI used to like to hold a flashlight upto my face and then I realize if there'ssomething there's not like that might befun to do a book with just eyeballs yousee what they're like with the wordbubbles in just their eyes and thenmaybe every now and then a littleflashlight well I don't know that thatwas enough for a story that was enoughsort of as an idea so I kept playingthen I came up with this little drawingback of that and Gerald and Gerald sayswhere is piggy visiting her grandmotherI'm filling in well that was reallyfunny that instead of pinky for anadventure you just hit back and thatwould hang out and do anything and thenI realized boy Gerald would really notlike waiting for pity and when I spotwent back to thinking about darkness inthat time my favorite thing and I areall these different stars now it startedto come together the idea of waiting andstars at the end so we wrote lots andlots of lines and different dialogue andit kind of came up at the end first forthis book for a while thoughtony was gonna be I cannot waitwe tired right and I thought it wasfunny to him Jerell really really angryand picking really really mellow butthen I realized it's maybe a little bitmore universal to saywaiting is not easy and then the funny Igot to like all these different linesand make these drawings of Geraldgroaning and different posesoh the groaning and the waiting and howhard that would bethen I was ready for this which is sortof crazy really hard to see each one ofthose squares represents two pages likethis and like a key book is like a goodson needs to have a rhythm and so here Iam figuring out the rhythm of the storywhat's happening from page to page whatthe dialogue was gonna be and movingthings around so that it all fits withinsixty four surfaces which is if youinclude the cover and the endpapersevery one of these books is sixty foursurfaces will talk maybe later about whythat number 64 so important well then Ijust kept writing and writing until itwas time to do my first dummy she liketo see what that looks likewell fortunately if you remember in mystudio I had all of the drawings wellmost of the drawings of all of my dogswhy don't we come in and go to elf in apity section and see what we so we'relucky this is the elephant baby sectionand I don't this I thought oh there onedrawer for every boat doesn't even thinkI was ever gonna write as many books asI did but if you take a look here[Music]elephant up in evokes I mean some of myfriends made some elephant piggy likereading books and there's some unlimitedsquirrels book so I had to double andquadruple up lesse & P this is 20 so it's a little bittowards the end here we go it says enpnumber 21 22 frog waiting and then thisis nap and slob let's take this out yeahright okay so these are the dummies whatthey look like for an elephant and piggybook unfortunately I think that gummingfor waiting is not easy isn't an exhibitright now so well look at this Johnnyjust he was sensible I really like slopwe see those are the days that I madethe drawings and then that entered stampis the day that I made the balloons andI'll explain to you later what the Bluesare it's all of the pacing the veryrough posing much like you're gonna seein the final book and I might make fiveof these drawings and then throw themaway and start over or that firstdrawing may work well or I may go backand revise it see those flies in the redthat's a revision and I play arounduntil I think this is worth showing tomy editor I know I may change some ofthe lines you see or some of thedrawings is the first time remember whenGerald tries the slop and goes all crazyto see just what it would look like withsome various bright colors anyway onceI've done that I'm ready for the blueswhich is how you would animate animateyou start with a blue pencil so thefirst thing I do is I have a size chartso there's Gerald and piggy as they werein 2013 as they get older their earssort of sagged or they got bigger butreally abide around here by around book20 that's about what they look like andso now I use that when I draw to makesure that they stay the right size allright I do all of thesenew drawings you can see erase a lot asa pencil as an eraser when so I'm tryingto make sure the eyes are right I'mtrying to make sure that the legs arethe right size or how I want the posingand then after that I can make thesefinals but I want to sort of think up sohere you go you can see that it's awrapped up blue that's the final theylook they look pretty similar piggysmile is a little bit different Piggy'seyes are a little bit different butGerald looks pretty close that all ofthese originals and then that star shotthey stand on a background that's grayso I get that it's a separate level andthose are all the surfaces labeled sothis is the title page surface oh fouroh five I made that on the 22nd ofFebruary in 2013these are got big silly groans and thereason that I've got these two lineshere is that is called the gutter inbetween the pages there's space so Iwant to make sure that the G and the aredon't get lost in that and this is goingto be done digitally as a typeset so Ijust draw it in red so that people knowat the publishing house if they're gonnahave to build those letters to fit in tolook like that and see it says new so itprobably was a second or third draft myeditor said you could probably do alittle better oh look here's the finalfour that that grown bubble because thatbubble is on that's what that looks likebut all the steps are go downokay it's my old notebook got a wholestack of them maybe let it later I'llshow you tens of years of these just ohall right I think it's time to teach youguys how to draw something so if youdon't have paper and pencil orparticularly a pencil with an eraser forthis particular drawing why don't you dome a favor and pause alright for tionalboth enjoy my level room and go get yourshot from windows and you wanna makesure that this time that's all has aneraser right okaybuzzing yeah all right you guys comeback okay now press play and let's sothis time I'm gonna use a pencil aneraser I'm gonna teach you guys how todraw gel and think on the website we'regonna have something like this that youcan print out later if you want to makesure and see yesterday we blew thepigeon and this is yes well now this isthe official explanation it doesn't meanI'm gonna do it exactly the same becauseI make an unofficial gel first thingyou're gonna do is you're gonna draw letme to it a little thicker because Idon't think it's gonna leave as much anumber seven like the seven in March17th now when you draw next to it alittle leg up like a little sibling 7right this is the younger 7 is a littlesmaller and the going out on the 7playdate now we're going to draw acircle all around thatnow look see how that circle wentthrough there and that's okay becausethis is what my eraser is gonna take myeraser because whatever there's a lineon top like thatthat's how do you know that it's on topif you can clear out that little lineand one thing so on top of the other soright now these sevens are above thisbig circlenow what about number eight that's nofair the seven got to go twice wellwe're gonna take a number 84 get off hitit on the side and then fall down righthere number eightoops number eight fell down to twostrains two little arms stadium floorall right starting to look a little bitlike Gerald so now you can take thedrawing and put it upside down if it'seasier and off of here do sort of halfof a letter U a letter you until it hitsthere and then a letter to you until ithits there all right no straight lineacross side to side see how many anglesit a little it makes it your feel alittle bit more cool and then I'm gonnado another letter U here small letteryou know Gerald smile and now the mostimportant part is we said last time iswhere the eyes go looks down there's adifferent feeling to look so I ain'tgonna have Gerald up me was happythat's my job can you hold up yourjournal I'd like to see that oh yeahrightyeah it looks pretty good doesn't lookexactly like mine it looks kind ofexactly like yours which is reallyawesome and you see again the eraser isso important if you ever make a drawingor you write a line and you do somethingyou know uh that's not who I wanted itto go that's all rightthere's an eraser if you don't have oneof those erasers you probably have oneon one of your pencils yeah this is oneof those blue pencils I was talkingabout for earlier than I do my elephantopp drawings with let's go around andsee how that eraser is all kind oferased off that's good I spent prettymuch most of my dayerasing different lines that was kind offun all right you know what I forgot todo I think I told you earlier I forgotto say hey make your own picture storiesand whatnot so not on maybe today if youdon't have anything to do if you'retrying to figure out what to do you cancome up with your own elephant and Knutventures remember we decided thatelephant Gerald doesn't like the darkand that became this story waiting isnot easy maybe there's something thatGerald really really likes or maybethere's something Gerald is afraid of ormaybe there's something that Joe reallywants to tell someone that y'all neverhas whatever that is that could be theidea for a story it's on now questiontime hopefully we're gonna be able toorganize stuff you know be able toanswer and look at some of your mailthat we're sending as email or some ofthe drawings that you're sending todayI'm gonna read some nails that was sentto my publisher and trying to answersome questions economy so this a realletter from someone named Clayton dearMo Willems I really like your books andthe books the word book says to eyeballit's really funny my name is Clayton Iam 8 years and your books make me laughThank You Clayton I'm really happy thatyour books making laughs how are youdoing Oh Clayton I'm a little nervousbut I feel like I have a lot of love inmy life and I feel like I'm able to dogood things and I'm so glad that I getto draw with all these kids all over thecountry so well nervous but I think I'mdoing okay how many books have youwritten and again the book is well I'vewritten a lot a lot of books I'm gonnaguess the question you have is reallyhow many of you publishedwell I've published a lot of books alsoI published I think right now about 60books yeah which is why all theseshelves need to have multiple books inthere I just keep making books so youbetter watch out because I'm probablygonna be working on another book prettysoon and that'll be 61 Thank You Claytongood it's going goodlet's see this is a letter oh mygoodness Connor kind of wrote theirphone number and I'm not gonna put thaton the screenI wrote a number a letter and then itlooks like one of Connors parents alsowrote the words but I'm worried Connorsfirst it says Mo Willems correctlyspelled Thank You Connor is the best hemakes the good books he buy comic Wowgoodness books Thank You Connor let'ssee what it says my favorite book ishappy pinking Wow Connor that's prettygreat it is very funny it makes me laughI read it today with my big brotherParker and my mom that is awesomedo you ever come to Minnesota I havebeen to Minnesota I don't think I'mgonna be in Minnesota in thefuture now the next couple weeks and Idon't go to Minnesota that often but Ireally really like Minnesota and I willlet you know that my nephew whose nameis Lee lives in Minnesota right now socould you meet someone named Lee you cansay are you my nephew are you mostnephew and if they say yes then say hiI'm Connoroh nice boy he's a little dry and itsays now this letter was written a longtime ago sometimes if you send me aletter takes a long time to get to thepublisher and then somehow it does itgets lost and then we have to write thethank you in them that has to go in themail so sometimes it takes a long longtime so if you've written me a letterand you haven't heard back yet I'm sorrybut you probably an answer is comingsoon so this one is from a long time agodear Mo Willems thank you for writing abook waiting is not easy this is fromkids honey kids you know I love PB and Jbooksthat's so funny some people call themelephant Feenysome people call them the Gerald and PEand some people call them PE and GeraldI never know why people do that it'sreally cool that they save their own wayI like when Gerald says waiting is noteasyI like when Gerald says we've beenwaiting for the whole day why doesGerald hit glasses Gerald remind me ofanybody I know or see when I would lookat myself in the mirror I don't tell youwhat your alters classes because Geraldis nervous and Gerald needs things nowyou notice the one thing about elephantopinion that your teachers do not say isthat they're pretty needed they're verynaked elephant in pinkbecause their cartoon characters andpity because Piggy's so mellow and sopure creamy doesn't need anything extrabut Gerald is nervous so I'm Dave Geraldglasses so that he would have somethingto try to hide behind that is why you'rerentin and then it says I could be astar in a piggy and Gerald book that'sright one that you write so now that youguys know how to draw Gerald you couldcreate a book called elephant and TV andme and its review guys can all go out onan adventure that's a great letterall right we're going to do a final dolet's see herepause just in case you need to get morepaper okay now this timewell parting I want you to get twodifferent colored pencils or crayons ormarkers but we're gonna do a specialtitle doodle or cool colors okay thevery part about itokay and this is a little game I dosometimes it's a little game sosometimes it's hard to think about whatyou draw uh-huh I don't know what todraw I can't come up with that eitheryou draw there's always something todraw so sometimes what I do is I take aletter that I know it's one of mytwenties 26 letters letter F and Isometimes I use that word that letterand words like framed something likethat and what I do is I take this letterF and then I try and turn it that was inred and now take a gray crayon or markerI'm gonna try and turn that upto another dry mmm could be a dinosaurwith teeth right that would be the mouthit could be a chair the cleanings back Idon't see what you're going to but don'tbe afraid to move the drawing around tosee if there are other things that thatare ohI'm gonna grab that red again this Mo invites you into his studio, doodles, and teaches you how to draw Elephant. A note from Mo with more about the project: When I became the Kennedy Center Education Artist-in-Residence, I didn't realize the most impactful word in that title would be 'Residence.' With millions of learners attempting to grow and educate themselves in new circumstances, I have decided to invite everyone into my studio once a day for the next few weeks. Grab some paper and pencils, pens, or crayons. We are going to doodle together and explore ways of writing and making. If you have questions for me, send them to LUNCHDOODLES@kennedy-center.org and I might get to answer them. You might be isolated, but you're not alone. You are an art maker. Let's make some together.
